In Search of the Perfect Crab in Singapore

One of the best things about going on an internship in the APAC RHQ here in  Singapore is you’d get to explore a new city with your fellow-interns. One slow Saturday evening, I set out to go to an obscure, but very popular, seafood restaurant called Mellben Seafood (233 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, 560233). Since I went to the restaurant
alone, I took a short cab ride from the Ang Mo Kio station. One wouldn’t miss
the place because there’s a really, really long line outside. A very good sign, I said to myself.

That’s around 1/3 of the line.

I met Boat (Thailand), Giang (Vietnam) and Adila (Malaysia) outside the restaurant around quarter before 8. Boat had been there twice already and it’s his ultimate favorite restaurant. Since he and Giang were going back home the next day, we just had to go there for the last time.

And so we waited…

…and waited…

…Boat played some toy catcher while
waiting (he actually got five toys, I think).

Best tip I’ll ever give you: go there early. Verrry early. We stood in line for over
an hour before we got a table.

The
lady by the entrance gave this to us. I… didn’t know what it meant.

We ordered creamy butter crab, chili crab, stir-fried spinach and mushroom, and
four servings of rice. We waited (again!) while the food was cooking. All of a sudden, a chorus of cherubims started singing, and a ray of light shone upon our dreary and hungry corner of the restaurant… HAAAAAAALELUJAH!!! THE FOOD IS HERE!!!

 The
crab was so good, we ordered another creamy butter crab!

The damage? $46.5/head. That included a can of soda and little buns. If I were a food critic, I’d give it 4 stars because they could’ve done something about the long line. Like put massage chairs outside. Or serve drinks in advance. Or install a giant TV in the parking lot. Anything to make the two-hour wait more enjoyable. Overall, I recommend it as a must-visit. That’s if you love crab and you’re not allergic to it!
